Position Objectives:
This position is a first line operator and will be classified as a Grade 1 – Waterworks Operator in groundwater and distribution. This person will be involved in the principles of water distribution repair, installation, maintenance and inspections of water meters, mains and pump stations. This person must also be able to read water meters, perform cross-connection inspections, operate a backhoe and test meters. The Lead Water Operator provides supervision. This person may be called out after regular hours due to water distribution and groundwater problems that may occur.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Participate in the efficient operations of the water utilities.
1. Participate in work of crews engaged in installing, flushing and repairing of water mains, fire hydrants, valves, water treatment facilities
and equipment.
2. Participate in all activities concerned with the installation, repair and reading of the City’s water meters.
3. Perform building and equipment maintenance and repair activities.
4. Makes periodic inspections of pumping stations, wells, and reservoirs.
5. Read and record daily water pumpage, kilowatt usage and run times.
6. Operate auxiliary systems and maintain equipment in working condition.
7. Inspects condition of water reservoirs on a regularly scheduled basis.
8. Schedules the flushing of every fire hydrant and assures that they are operating order.
9. Operate backhoe and other construction equipment.
10. Coordinate and respond to water main breaks and participate in their repair.
11. Perform good public relations.
Plan and direct daily planned tasks for the water department.
1. Performs cross-connection inspections at residential, commercial and industrial sites.
2. Inspection of private wells at customers residents.
3. Ability to maintain DNR certification and obtain adequate amount of
credits yearly to maintain waterworks license.
4. Ability to participate in all safety programs that the City requires for water department personnel.
Desirable Training and Experience:
Qualifications:
- Knowledge and ability to schedule the principles of water department duties.
- Knowledge and ability to perform the duties of water plant operations and maintenance.
- Knowledge of State and Federal reporting requirements in relations
to water treatment.
- Skilled in maintaining accurate and complete records.
- Skilled in preparing clear and detailed reports.
- Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships
with city officials, staff and the public.
- Skilled in operating heavy equipment.
- Possession or able to obtain a grade 1: G & D waterworks license.
- Possession of a valid Wisconsin CDL.
